| The Coton de Tulear,
pronounced "coe-Tawn day Tule-ee-r", means cotton of Tulear.
The Coton draws its name from it's unique cotton like hair and Tulear
a port
city of Madagascar, the worlds 4th largest island, off the coast of Africa.
The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon family. Its history is
not well documented, speculation tells of a small breed that earned its
keep catching rodents, on the early sailing ships. After
a ship wreck and
cross breeding between several Island breeds and several generations
the result was today's Coton de Tulear.
During the 17th century France
claimed Madagascar. This was the beginning of the love affair between
the Coton de Tulear and French royalty. Soon nobles enacted laws
prohibiting any one from owning a Coton except them. Thus the term
originated "the royal dog of Madagascar".
